Faster Healing After Surgery With Cactus Juice
“My physical therapist says
I am healing faster
from (ACL) knee surgery
than anyone he has ever seen!”
...Shannon Atwater
Rollergirl
There’s a common saying in roller derby, “It’s not a question of if you’ll get hurt, but when you’ll get hurt and how bad.”
For Major Jammerfall (Shannon Atwater), a strong jammer and blocker for the Upstate Roller Girl Evolution (URGE), her injury happened after she’d only been skating for one year.
During a scrimmage with several other leagues, she fell, tearing her ACL in the process. Unfortunately, knee injuries are quite common in roller derby. Major had surgery on it and had been expecting a long recovery time before she could be back on skates. She began drinking the sweet anti-inflammatory juice on a Monday. After hearing about the cactus juice from the Coach of the Blue Ridge Rollergirls, she began drinking it 5 days after her surgery. Up to that point, her knee was recovering at a normal rate. It was swollen and had not yet begun to
drain.
Monday evening her knee became much more swollen after she bench coached at a scrimmage and spent the evening walking around on it. By Tuesday, after a day and a half of drinking the juice, her knee began draining, and continued draining dramatically for the next four days.
At first this constant flow oozing out of her knee concerned her, until her physical therapist informed her that it was all the swelling in her knee needing a place to go and trying to get out.
The best part of her recovery is that every time Major has been to her physical therapist, she learns about another way she is healing faster than anyone else the therapist has ever seen!
She had full range of bend in her knee two weeks earlier than expected. She was able to ride a bike in therapy sessions three weeks earlier than expected. She no longer needs to sleep in her knee brace, and in fact only needs to wear it when she goes out in a public place where some one might knock into her.
