Lynda Lyday
Lynda Lyday is kind of a big deal. She’s a home improvement expert who has shot over 350 television shows, including hosting shows on the Discovery Channel, HGTV, and the DIY Network. Her story is a very interesting one and we consider ourselves lucky to have such a talent among us.
In the 80s, Lynda moved to New York City to study acting. (Of course, this means she was working as a waitress. ) Growing up in Atlanta, Georgia, Lynda was taught to be a lady, which meant she was never allowed to touch tools. But one day, when she went to see a friend’s new cabinets, she had an a-ha moment and she just knew she had to learn how to do carpentry. She called up a business agent, who was so amused at the idea of a woman going to carpentry school, he worked some magic and got her into the union school by the end of the day, which was no small feat.
Once in school, Lynda worked to find an apprenticeship. And by working, I mean that she found the best woodworking company in Manhattan and became gum on their shoe. She called them every single day at 3 o’clock asking about openings she could apprentice in and began routinely going to their job sites, asking if they had a job for her. After six months of hounding them every day, they took her on as an apprentice. In her 4th year as an apprentice, she won a Golden Hammer Award, which earned her huge respect and recognition, and led to her being the school’s first female carpentry teacher!
After spending three years working during the day and teaching at night, Lynda quit teaching and began performing at the comedy clubs in the tri-state area of New York. When the Discovery Channel was in search of diverse hosts , Lynda was the perfect fit with her knowledge of carpentry and her acting skills. She became an interior finish expert on Discovery’s Gimme Shelter, which led to The Fix on HGTV, which in turn led to Talk 2 DIY on the DIY Network. Currently, Lynda is known as a go-to home improvement expert on tv shows, most especially the news, and has been on a slew of programs, including CNN, the Today Show, and MSNBC. Lynda has also written two books on home improvement and has developed a tool line for which she is in the process of raising money.
Lynda has several characters she has created, including Big Lou, who has bridged Lynda’s comedy background with her home improvement background. Check out Big Lou in action at AskBigLou.com, and be sure to watch her videos. One video includes a skit from Glee star Jane Lynch!
When Lynda moved to Florida in late 2010, she was physically in lots of pain, starting in her left foot, going all the way up to her lower back, and including severe headaches. She got a bottle of juice from her friend Susan, one of our other health coaches, and felt instant relief. While it took 90 days for her to get completely out of her pain, she noticed several things early on, including dreams that were almost Technicolor, a sign that the Betalains were getting to work in her brain. During the first 90 days, she also went through several retracings, where the Betalains move deeper into your system to flush out toxins and inflammation. During this time, Lynda would feel almost as if she had the flu, and then after a few days would be right as rain again. Lynda loves that she got to experience retracing because it makes her better able to coach others when they are going through retracing. Often people are frustrated because they get an initial boost and then everything gets worse, “when in fact you should be celebrating it’s happening because just on the other side is the miracle.” We feel it is a miracle that we are lucky enough to have such a talent working with us.
